Buenos Aires School in Guatemala

The following information was provided by the four teachers at Buenos Aires School in Guatemala.

There are approximately 147 full-time students ranging from 6 to 14 years of age.  There are no high school classes at all.

Following is a first-hand account of what was observed when Fe Viva visited in the spring of 2005:

  • The primera and segundo classes are together in one building

  • The other classes are together in a second building right beside them

  • The buildings have one room, low ceilings, dark, no electricity, no running water, no windows or doors, just openings

  • They have some small chairs and tables

  • The primera/segundo students were printing in a scribbler with a pencil.  There were no other resources anywhere

  • The other building for the higher grades had a small map of Guatemala on the wall and one small chalkboard

The teachers were asked what resources they needed for their programs.  Following is the list they provided:

  • Textbooks:  Math, Science, Social Studies (in Spanish language)

  • Chalkboards and chalk

  • Cardstock for posters

  • Notebooks, paper

  • Class sets of scissors, glue, crayons, markers, etc.

  • Globe

  • Sports equipment:  soccer balls, play balls, skipping ropes, basketballs, hoops, etc.
