Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO) on a website is designed to improve the volume and quality of traffic to your website from the many different search engines, such as Google. The earlier your site shows up in the search results, the more visitors it will typically receive. Optimizing your website usually requires editing the content and HTML (website programming language), plus any other related coding to decrease search engine barriers and increase its relevance to specific keywords.

“In December 2009 Google announced it would be using the web search history of all its users in order to populate search results Real-time-search was introduced in late 2009 in an attempt to make search results more timely and relevant. Historically site administrators have spent months or even years optimizing a website to increase search rankings. With the growth in popularity of social media sites and blogs the leading engines made changes to their algorithms to allow fresh content to rank quickly within the search results. This new approach to search places importance on current, fresh and unique content.”

From the above quote it is plain that Google’s new approach to search importance is based on “current, fresh and unique content.” Thus, we see again the importance of adding a blogging/news section to your website to provide your clients with the up-to-date information of your specialty area. This now works four-fold in your favor: your customers see you as the expert in your field, they will come back to your site to see what is the lastest and greatest, they will introduce their acquintences to your site, plus Google is looking for sites that are changing.

What’s a CMS?

When it comes to websites “Content is King” and even more important “Communication is King”.  A great looking website will attract your target audience but they will not stay long if your content is out of date, or not applicable to their current needs.  Giving your clients content that is up to date, applicable, and meeting their needs will pay advertising dividends as they are more likely to recommend your site to other potential clients. As well it should communicate with your potential clients in a way that will motivate them to take action.

At DMuirDesigns we recommend a content management system (CMS) to keep all your content updated.  CMS software makes it easy for the average person to manage and change web content without constantly needing to contact your web designer, which can be time consuming and expensive. The content management systems DMuirDesigns use have simple interfaces that allow you to bold, italicize, align text and add pictures like you do in any word processor, such as Microsoft Word.

With a content management system you do not need a degree in computer science to update your web page.  CMS’s costs range from extremely expensive custom-designed systems to ones that are open source and free. At DMuirDesigns we recommend using one of the cheaper contact management systems if at all possible.  We currently recommend WordPress, Joomla or IncontextEditing depending on your specific needs.

CMS is an enormous boost to the small business or organization as it puts the website content control back into the hands of the content creators. Having said all this though, some businesses do not want to be bothered with changing their own website and prefer to leave that to the web designer and most designers do that work also. Either way, it is nice to have the option to make those changes if so desired or you need something changed in a rush.
